Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure

How Cedar & Breath makes money, where the advertising sits, and why there are no affiliate links on this site.

How this site is funded

Two ways, and that is the complete list:

  1. The things we sell. Digital products bought directly from us, listed with their prices on every page that mentions them.
  2. Third-party display advertising. Advertising slots on some pages, filled by an advertising network.

We are not paid by anyone to write anything. No brand has sponsored a page on this site, supplied a product in exchange for coverage, or had any input into what we publish.

Affiliate links: we do not use any

There are no affiliate links anywhere on this site. When we name a piece of equipment or an ingredient, nobody is paying us to name it and no commission is attached to any link here.

If that ever changes, we will do it the way the FTC's Endorsement Guides require rather than the way that is convenient for us. Specifically, the disclosure will appear directly beside the link, in the body text, above it, in words that actually say what is happening — something like "We earn a commission if you buy through this link" rather than a bare "affiliate link", which research shows readers do not understand to mean payment. It will not be a hyperlink you have to click, it will not be in the footer, and it will not be at the bottom of a long page where nobody reaches it.

Where advertising appears, and where it does not

Advertising slots appear on editorial pages: the home page, the index pages and the long articles. They are clearly labelled Advertisement so there is never a question about what is ours and what is paid for.

There is no advertising at all on:

  • the contact page;
  • any page where something is sold or ordered;
  • any policy page, including this one;
  • the page you reach when a link is broken.

Advertising slots are also kept well clear of buttons, navigation and form fields, so you do not hit one by accident when you meant to press something else. We do not use pop-ups, interstitials, auto-playing video, sticky advertising bars, or anything that covers what you are reading.

Editorial independence

Advertisers have no say in what we publish and no advance sight of it. We do not know which advertisement you will see — the network decides that in the moment the page loads. An advertisement appearing beside an article is not a recommendation from us, and we have no relationship with the advertiser beyond the network that placed it.

If we ever write about something we sell, we say that it is ours in the sentence where we mention it.

No testimonials, reviews or ratings

We do not publish testimonials, customer quotes, star ratings, review counts or "as featured in" badges anywhere on this site, and there is no rating markup in the page code either. There is no way for you to verify any of those, so rather than ask you to take them on trust, we leave the whole category alone.

No sponsored content

We do not publish sponsored posts, paid guest posts, paid links or advertorials. We receive offers for all four most weeks and the answer is always no. If that ever changed, the page would be labelled as sponsored at the top, before the first paragraph, not at the bottom.

Advertising cookies

Advertising involves cookies, and what is set depends entirely on the choice you make on the banner. The detail is in the Cookie Policy and in the Privacy Policy. You can change your mind at any time at Your Privacy Choices.

How the slots are placed

Where an advertisement can appear is decided when the page is built, not by the advertising network. Each slot sits in a fixed position with space reserved for it, so the page does not jump underneath you while you are reading. Slots are kept at least 150 pixels away from navigation, from buttons, from form fields and from anything you might be about to press, and they never sit between a heading and the paragraph it introduces.

The styling is deliberately plain: a flat neutral panel with a dashed outline and the word Advertisement above it in small letters. It does not borrow the card shapes, the rounded corners, the button colours or the typefaces used elsewhere on this site, because an advertisement that looks like content is a trick, and an advertisement that looks like a button is a trick that costs you a click you did not intend.

On a long article there are at most three slots. On an index page there are at most two. We would rather the page were pleasant than squeeze in a fourth.

If you see an advertisement you object to

We do not choose the individual advertisements and we cannot see what you were shown, but we can act on a report. Email classes@cedarandbreath.info with a description or a screenshot and the page you were on, and we will raise it with the network and block the category where we can. If something unlawful, deceptive or genuinely offensive is appearing on these pages, we want to know, because it reflects on us whether or not we picked it.

You can also reduce how targeted the advertising is at any time — see Your Privacy Choices. That changes how advertisements are selected for you, not whether they appear.

Questions

If anything on this site looks like paid placement to you, ask us. We would rather answer the question than have you wonder.
